I am about to purchase and install Quickbooks Pro 2012 for an oral surgical practice I work for. It has been years since I have worked with Quickbooks and found these Tutorials so very helpful!

The practice has two locations which the staff and doctor rotate to daily. The practice monies and tracking are all part of ONE/same checking account, however, when we post patient payments (income), insurance payments (income)and conversely when we need to issues patient refunds (expenses) we do TRACK them by each separate practice location. The daily deposit is ONE amount and deposited into ONE/the same account however, it would be nice to track this by location.

Question I have in setting up the Chart of Accounts is how many "subcategories" can I create for Income/Expense accounts? Do I have to sent up each as (for example) Chart of Account (Income): "Patient Payments" and then have two subcategories as "Location A" and "Location B"? I want to make sure that the ledger reflects just the TOTAL amount of each daily deposit (checks for both locations)as my boss is still "old school" and will want his paper statement to match up with the Quickbook ledger, but how will I be able to track how much of each of this daily deposit is for "Location A" vs. "Location B"?

When we get into Expenses I am unsure as to how to segregate things such as office and surgical expenditures/supplies and equipment as they are tracked by practice location also. Example: Chart of Account (Expense): "Office Supplies" and then have two separate subcategories "Location A" and "Location B". How many subcategories are available...example is medicine orders. Ideally I would like to have the broad Chart of Account that is "Surgical Supplies"...then the subcategory of "Surgical Supplies - Location A" and then a subcategory of "Medicine". Is that possible or am I limited to one subcategory which would have to be "Surgical Supplies/Medicine- Location A"?

By doing the above I am able to track income and expenditures by location, correct? I assume that there is a report that allows me to segrate income and expenditures by location?

Since the two practice locations operate from the same checking account I don't want to create two different ledgers for each practice location. Just trying to figure this one out...

Thanks in advance for helping me get my hands around this!
